What is the density of water?

Pure water at 4 °C is 1000 kg/m³, which equals 1 g/cm³, 1 g/mL and 1 kg/L. This makes water a convenient reference: any substance denser than 1 g/cm³ sinks in water, and anything lighter floats. Density drops slightly as water warms.

Are g/cm³, g/mL and kg/L the same?

Numerically, yes — all three give the same number for a given density, because 1 cm³ = 1 mL and the unit ratios cancel out. So 2.7 g/cm³ is 2.7 g/mL and 2.7 kg/L. They're just different ways of writing the same quantity, which is why they sit together in this converter.

How do I convert kg/m³ to g/cm³?

Divide by 1000: 1 g/cm³ equals 1000 kg/m³. So steel at 7850 kg/m³ is 7.85 g/cm³. Going the other way, multiply g/cm³ by 1000 to get kg/m³. This tool does the factor for you in both directions.
