Sales Tax Calculator
Add sales tax to a price or back it out of a tax-inclusive total. Editable rate with Pakistan's 18% GST as default, plus a common-rates comparison table.
About the Sales Tax Calculator
This sales tax calculator works in both directions. In add mode it puts tax on top of a net price: tax = price × rate ÷ 100. In remove (reverse) mode it extracts the tax already inside a total: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) — the step people most often get wrong, because subtracting 18% from a tax-inclusive price does not give the original amount.
The tax rate is fully editable and defaults to 18%, Pakistan's standard GST rate on goods; set it to 13–16% for provincial services taxes, or to whatever your state or country charges. A comparison table shows your amount at several common rates side by side, which is useful when quoting customers in different regions.
Shopkeepers pricing products, freelancers writing invoices, and shoppers checking a receipt all need this daily. For example, a 25,000 item at 18% carries 4,500 of tax for a 29,500 total; and a tax-inclusive 29,500 receipt at 18% breaks back into 25,000 net + 4,500 tax. All calculations stay in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply by the rate and add: tax = price × rate ÷ 100. A 25,000 product at 18% carries 25,000 × 0.18 = 4,500 tax, for a total of 29,500. Equivalently, multiply the price by 1.18 in one step.
How do I remove sales tax from a total (reverse calculation)?
Divide by 1 plus the rate: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). For a 29,500 tax-inclusive total at 18%: 29,500 ÷ 1.18 = 25,000 net, so the tax was 4,500. Simply subtracting 18% of 29,500 (5,310) would be wrong, because the 18% was charged on the smaller net amount.
What is the sales tax rate in Pakistan?
The federal standard GST on goods is 18% (as of recent budgets), while provincial sales taxes on services typically run 13–16% depending on the province (e.g. Sindh and Punjab differ). Rates change with budgets, so the calculator keeps the rate editable rather than hard-coding it.
What is the difference between sales tax, GST and VAT?
They are cousins. A retail sales tax is charged once at the final sale (the US model); GST/VAT is charged at each stage of the supply chain with credits for tax already paid, so the end consumer bears the same burden. The arithmetic in this calculator — add or extract a percentage — is identical for all three.
How do I calculate tax-inclusive pricing for my shop?
Decide the final shelf price, then use remove mode to see the net and tax split for your records. If you want to net exactly 1,000 after 18% tax, add mode shows you must charge 1,180. The common-rates table helps when you sell in multiple provinces or countries with different rates.
