About the Income Tax Calculator (India, FY 2025-26)

This income tax calculator computes your tax for FY 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27) under both Indian regimes. The new (default) regime uses the Budget 2025 slabs: nil up to ₹4 lakh, then 5% (₹4–8L), 10% (₹8–12L), 15% (₹12–16L), 20% (₹16–20L), 25% (₹20–24L) and 30% above ₹24 lakh, with a ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried taxpayers.

The headline change for FY 2025-26 is the enhanced Section 87A rebate: taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays zero tax under the new regime — effectively ₹12.75 lakh of salary once the standard deduction is applied — with marginal relief just above the threshold. The old regime keeps its familiar slabs (5% above ₹2.5L, 20% above ₹5L, 30% above ₹10L), a ₹50,000 standard deduction, rebate up to ₹5 lakh, and lets you claim deductions like 80C, 80D and HRA.

Enter your annual income, pick a regime and the calculator shows tax, 4% health-and-education cess, total liability, effective tax rate, a slab-wise breakdown table and an approximate monthly in-hand figure. Switch regimes to compare — with large deductions the old regime can still win, but for most salaried taxpayers the new regime is now cheaper. Surcharge on incomes above ₹50 lakh is not modelled.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the new tax regime slabs for FY 2025-26?

Budget 2025 set seven slabs: nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% on ₹4–8 lakh, 10% on ₹8–12 lakh, 15% on ₹12–16 lakh, 20% on ₹16–20 lakh, 25% on ₹20–24 lakh and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Salaried taxpayers also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, and the Section 87A rebate wipes out tax on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free in FY 2025-26?

Yes, under the new regime — the enhanced Section 87A rebate cancels the slab tax when taxable income does not exceed ₹12 lakh. For salaried people the ₹75,000 standard deduction stretches this to ₹12.75 lakh of gross salary. Note the rebate does not apply to special-rate income like capital gains, and marginal relief eases the cliff just above ₹12 lakh.

Should I choose the old or the new tax regime?

Compare your actual numbers — this calculator lets you switch regimes instantly. The old regime only wins if your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest and so on) are large; as a rough guide, at higher incomes you typically need well over ₹5 lakh of deductions to beat the new regime's lower slabs and ₹12 lakh rebate. For most salaried taxpayers without big deductions, the new regime now results in less tax.

What is the standard deduction for FY 2025-26?

Salaried employees and pensioners get a flat standard deduction of ₹75,000 under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime, subtracted from salary before slab rates apply. No bills or proofs are needed. It is why the zero-tax threshold under the new regime is quoted as ₹12.75 lakh for salaried individuals versus ₹12 lakh for others.

What is the 4% cess added to my income tax?

The Health and Education Cess is levied at 4% on your income tax (after the 87A rebate and any surcharge) in both regimes. If your slab tax works out to ₹1,00,000, cess adds ₹4,000 for a total of ₹1,04,000. It funds health and education programmes and applies to virtually all taxpayers.

Does this calculator include surcharge for high incomes?

No. Surcharge applies on top of slab tax for total income above ₹50 lakh (10%, rising to 15%, 25% and — old regime only — 37%; capped at 25% under the new regime). TDS timing, capital gains at special rates and other edge cases are also outside its scope, so treat the output as an estimate and confirm with a CA before filing.
