Video Compressor

Shrink video file size with a simple quality slider, right in your browser. Free, private, no signup or upload.

About the Video Compressor

This free video compressor reduces the file size of a video so it fits upload limits, sends over email or messaging, or simply takes up less space. A single quality control (based on H.264's constant-rate factor) lets you trade a little visual quality for a much smaller file, and the tool shows exactly how much you saved.

Compression runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg WebAssembly, so your video is never uploaded. The engine (about 30 MB) downloads from a CDN on first use and is cached, so the first compression is the slow one. The output is a widely-compatible H.264 MP4 with a web-friendly yuv420p pixel format.

Higher compression means a smaller file but softer detail; the Balanced setting is a good starting point for most clips. If you also lower the resolution with our Video Resizer first, you can shrink files even further. Videos up to 100 MB are supported.

How to Use the Video Compressor

  1. 1Choose a video file, up to 100 MB.
  2. 2Set the quality — lower quality means a smaller file.
  3. 3Click Compress Video and wait for the progress bar.
  4. 4Check the size saving, preview the result and download it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. All processing runs in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device — only the converter engine is downloaded, once.

Why is the first run slow?

The first time you use any converter here, the browser downloads the FFmpeg core (about 30 MB) from a CDN and compiles it. It is then cached for the session, so later runs are much faster.

How much smaller will my video be?

It depends on the source and the quality you choose, but reductions of 40–70% are common. The tool shows the exact percentage saved after compressing.

Will compressing ruin the quality?

Not at the higher-quality settings — the difference is hard to see. Only aggressive compression makes softness obvious. Start with Balanced and adjust if you need a smaller file.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes, 100 MB per file. Because everything runs in your browser's memory, very large files can be slow or run out of memory. Trim long clips first if you hit the limit.
