GIF Resizer

Resize an animated GIF to a new width while keeping the animation smooth, in your browser. Free, private, no upload.

About the GIF Resizer

This free GIF resizer scales an animated GIF to a new width while preserving the animation and aspect ratio. Making a GIF smaller is one of the most effective ways to shrink its file size, so it fits upload limits and loads faster in chat, docs and web pages.

The resize runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg WebAssembly, so your GIF is never uploaded. The engine (about 30 MB) downloads from a CDN on first use and is cached, so the first resize is slower than later ones. The tool builds a fresh color palette (palettegen/paletteuse) at the new size so the scaled GIF stays clean and sharp.

Downscaling keeps quality high and cuts size significantly; upscaling a GIF cannot add detail and will look blocky, so it is best to scale down. GIFs up to 100 MB are supported.

How to Use the GIF Resizer

  1. 1Choose an animated GIF, up to 100 MB.
  2. 2Enter the target width in pixels — the height follows automatically.
  3. 3Click Resize GIF and wait for the progress bar.
  4. 4Compare the size, preview the animation and download it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. All processing runs in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device — only the converter engine is downloaded, once.

Why is the first run slow?

The first time you use any converter here, the browser downloads the FFmpeg core (about 30 MB) from a CDN and compiles it. It is then cached for the session, so later runs are much faster.

Will resizing keep the animation?

Yes. Every frame is scaled and a new optimized palette is generated, so the GIF still animates and loops — just at the new size, usually with a smaller file.

Does the aspect ratio stay correct?

Yes. You set the width and the height is calculated to match, so the GIF is scaled proportionally and never stretched or squashed.

Can I also compress a GIF further?

Yes — pair this with our GIF Compressor to lower the frame rate and colors, or convert to MP4 with our GIF to MP4 tool for the smallest possible file.
