About the GIF Compressor
This free GIF compressor reduces the file size of animated GIFs so they load faster and fit upload limits. You control three levers — frame rate, dimensions and the number of colors — and the tool builds an optimized color palette (palettegen/paletteuse) for the best quality at a smaller size. A before/after preview and size comparison show exactly what you saved.
The compression runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg WebAssembly, so your GIF is never uploaded. The engine (about 30 MB) downloads from a CDN on first use and is cached, making the first run slower than the rest.
GIF is an old, inherently inefficient format for animation. This tool gets the most out of it, but the biggest savings come from lowering the frame rate and scaling the image down. If size is critical, converting to MP4 with our GIF to MP4 tool is usually far smaller than any GIF can be.

Is my GIF uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs in your browser with FFmpeg WebAssembly. The GIF never leaves your device — only the engine is downloaded, once.
Why is the first compression slow?
On first use the FFmpeg core (~30 MB) is downloaded from a CDN and compiled in your browser. It is then cached, so subsequent compressions are quicker.
How do I make the GIF as small as possible?
Lower the frame rate (e.g. to 10 fps), scale the width down, and reduce the color count. Each of these cuts size; combined they can shrink a GIF dramatically.
The tool says it could not shrink my GIF — why?
Some GIFs are already heavily optimized, so gentle settings produce no gain. Try a lower frame rate, smaller dimensions or fewer colors to force a real reduction.
Should I use MP4 instead?
If you can use video, yes. Our GIF to MP4 converter usually produces a file a fraction of the size of any compressed GIF, with smoother playback — GIF is just an inefficient format for motion.
